Current Faith Formation Opportunities

CHILDREN  (Ages birth through Grade 5)

Sylvania United Church of Christ's Children's Ministries seeks to offer the opportunity to all who walk through our doors:

to know the Scriptures,
to become articulate about faith,
and to see more clearly the relationship between God, the gospel, and our world.

Sundays, September - May

Our Sunday School classes occur during our 9:30 educational hour. We begin the education hour with all ages (preschool through Grade 5) in "The Cove." After the opening story, the children break into smaller, age-appropriate groups to "dive deeper" into the story. Parents can drop off children as early as 9:20 a.m. so that they can attend adult education classes, which also begin at 9:30 a.m.

Children's Worship is available during the 10:40 a.m. worship service (10 a.m. worship in the summer). The children remain in the service until after the Message for the Whole Family of God.  Then they go to the ravine-level classrooms for their own classes;  preschool/kindergarten, grades 1-3, and grades 4-5.

On the fourth Sunday of each month, during the Message for the Whole Family of God, the children help pass cans through each pew to collect the Noisy Offering, which benefits the Feed Your Neighbor program in Toledo.

Child care for infants and toddlers is available in our nursery each Sunday morning, for adult studies, and for special church events.

Vacation Bible School: Join our week-long evening summer Christian Education program for children, youth, and adults. We celebrate the Word of God through dinner, story, song, games, arts & crafts, outreach, and fellowship.

Child Protection Policy: Sylvania United Church of Christ has a written policy concerning the procedures for hired staff and members of the church wishing to volunteer to work with our children and youth in the various programs offered during the year.

YOUTH (Ages Grade 6 through Grade 12)

The Youth Team of Sylvania UCC aims to provide guidance for the teens and the whole faith community in recognizing and utilizing the significant gifts the teens offer to the life of the entire church. We emphasize that youth members be integrated with and not separated from the mainstream of the church's life and mission. In acknowledgement of teens' unique place as beginners on a journey of faith and as people with unique interests, we also offer youth specific programming both for faith formation and fellowship.

Our youth group (6th-12th graders) meets at least once a month for activities offering fellowship, service or learning opportunities. Age dependent activities or whole group activities are planned throughout the year.

Sundays, September-May

9:30 a.m. Sunday School - Intergenerational or age specific learning opportunities. Youth ages 6th-12th grade meet in the Youth Room during this hour.

10:40 a.m. Worship hour - Youth remain with their families in worship.

CONFIRMATION (Grades 7 & 8 or high school age)

Confirmation is a two year program which seeks to nurture and strengthen a sense of the Spirit within the youth to give them a solid basis of knowledge upon which to build their faith. Classroom time offers a basic foundation in the Christian faith and membership in the body of Christ. In addition to classroom time, visits to other churches to witness the variety of worship styles available to Christians, service projects within our church and community, attendance in confirmation camp, and other experiential opportunities are offered. A mentor program is also a vital part of this program. The pastor and lay leadership work together to create a meaningful and vibrant experience for our Confirmands.

It is our desire to build a sense of community among our youth and to blend the confirmation experience into the larger offerings of education, worship, fellowship and service for our children and youth. Thus parents, mentors and staff at Sylvania UCC work to encourage youth participation in all aspects of church life.

Confirmation is open to any 7th and 8th grade youth or high school youth who have not previously been confirmed. Classes are on scheduled Sunday evenings, September-May.
